Climbing is not a battle with the elements, nor against the law of gravity. It's a battle against oneself. — Walter Bonatti

Believe. No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit. — Helen Keller, the first blind and deaf person to graduate from college (in 1904, magna cum laude)

One of my favorite writers, the late novelist Ernest Hemingway, once said: "There are only three real sports: bull-fighting, car racing and mountain climbing. All the others are mere games." This is partly why I was so thrilled to recently receive an invitation from Procter & Gamble Distributing (Philippines), Inc. president James Lafferty to meet the world's first and still the only blind person to have climbed Mount Everest — 40-year-old Erik Weihenmayer. He was invited to speak at the annual meeting of 800 P&G Philippines employees at Palms Country Club, Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang.

Written by Wilson Lee Flores
Friday, 16 May 2008
“Philippine Star” on May 12, 2008 said: “There’s a fast-rising agriculture entrepreneur with the bold vision to seize the many golden opportunities of the ongoing global food crisis. Only 32 years old and a youth whose father died early, self-made businessman and vegetarian Antonio ‘Tony’ Tiu recently gave Philippine STAR an exclusive interview on his plans to publicly list his newly renamed firm AgriNurture, Inc. (Ani for short, which he points out is “harvest” in Tagalog) in two months. He also plans to raise P1.3 billion pesos to expand his fruit exports, farms, fruit processing plants and other integrated agriculture businesses. Tiu’s firm is also the biggest fruit and vegetable supplier to SM groceries and malls nationwide.

“Tony Tiu is proficient in English, Tagalog, Mandarin and Hokkien, his immigrant great-grandfather Joaquin Tiusingko having first settled in San Marcelino, Zambales. Today, Tony Tiu has thousands of hectares of farms planted with jatropha, rice, corn, potatoes, vegetables, chili, mangoes, papaya, root crops, etc., all over Zambales, Sorsogon, Bukidnon, Rizal, Pangasinan, Pampanga and Tarlac. He is planning to buy an Indonesian agriculture firm and a Hong Kong food firm. He will soon launch agriculture scholarships with Silliman University in Dumaguete City.”
